What an amazing step forward for both the patient(s) and for the hospital(s).
As you continue to read this Blog you will be able to ‘click’ on a link to read more, along with being able to watch a short video, about how patients in Somerset hypnotised to help with pain relief after major surgery…

Researchers have found that hypnosis can calm brain regions that help control autonomic functions like heart rate, blood flow, and breathing. This is what leads to the physical relaxation that’s a hallmark of hypnosis,

Hypnotherapy is a completely natural, effective and proven way to reduce anticipatory fears and help you develop a calmer more positive state of mind. Being more relaxed, calm and positive going into the surgery also helps the surgery to go well and improves your rate of recovery.

Hypnotherapy enables patients to lower their stress and anxiety levels, both before and after their surgery. Just a few of the benefits are:

  • reduce fear, anxiety and tension before surgery,
  • enables the body to enter a state of relaxation; in mind, boy and spirit,
  • experience less pain during and after surgery,
  • require less pain medication after surgery

On a physiological level during hypnosis, you shift from the fight or flight state (the sympathetic nervous system) to the resting or safe state, where the parasympathetic nervous system is activated. When your body is under stress, for example, before surgery, several systems kick into action. One of these is the parasympathetic nervous system. With time, practice and hypnosis, you can actually improve how this system works to reduce your stress and make you feel more relaxed.

What is the parasympathetic nervous system?

The parasympathetic nervous system is part of your body’s autonomic nervous system. Its partner is the sympathetic nervous system, which control’s your body’s fight or flight response.

The parasympathetic nervous system controls your body’s ability to relax. It’s sometimes called the “rest and digest” state. It helps maintain daily functions like your resting heart rate, which is your heart rate while your body is at rest; your metabolism; and your resting bronchial constriction, which affects your breathing rate. It essentially keeps you in a relaxed state.

What role does the parasympathetic nervous system play in stress response?

Right now, there are many things causing people stress that are neurological or psychological in nature, that are making the body feel like it’s fight-or-flight time. Undergoing surgery is one area that puts the body under immense stress – creating chaos in your sympathetic nervous system, causing your body to feel like it’s in danger. That high level of stress keeps your heart rate elevated, dilates your pupils, raises your blood pressure and keeps everything in your body on high alert.

The parasympathetic nervous system does something called downregulating. It mainly functions using a nerve called the Vagus nerve, which sends impulses from the brain to your body but also back from your body to the brain. In essence, your parasympathetic nervous system tells your brain what’s happening, instead of your brain telling your body what to do.

If this system is functioning well, it reduces your risk of cardiac heart disease and stroke; increases your digestive metabolism, so it’s better for your gut; and decreases migraines. It will also give you better emotional and overall physical health, and possibly even a longer life span.

Hypnotherapy will enable your body to relax, which in-turn will allow your body to deal with the upcoming surgery and the healing process that will follow. Hypnotherapy can enable you to deal with many areas of your life in a more productive, positive, calm way.
